A 100% natural rheology modifier that goes beyond simple thickening by forming a three dimensional rheological network that enables formulas to dispense easily, spread uniformly, and settle into a refined, even film while delivering elevated sensorial performance.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will it work for my formula?

How does NatureThix 900 differ from other grades of hydrogenated castor oil currently being offered on the market?
  • NatureThix 900 is made exclusively with SuCCESS™ Sustainable Castor Oil.
  • There is roughly 290 times more surface exposed per unit volume in NatureThix 900 with a D100 of 44 microns versus a ½” flake of hydrogenated castor oil.
    • This means heat from the surrounding medium reaches the core of each particle far faster using NatureThix 900.
    • Using NatureThix 900 takes less time and energy to drive heat all the way through each particle, saving the manufacturer time and money.
Will NatureThix 900 work in cold process?

No, NatureThix 900 requires heat activation and will not work in cold process.

How about below 76 °C?

We recommend using NatureThix 900 between 176 °F (80 °C) to 194 °F (90 °C).

Is there an exception to using NatureThix 900 in cold process?

Yes, but it still requires activating NatureThix 900 using heat. Follow the steps below for use in cold process:
Step 1 - Prepare a NatureThix 900 “intermediate” by dispersing 5% to 10% concentration in a portion of the formula.
Step 2 - Heat up to 194 °F (90 °C) and gently cool under agitation. Save this thickened intermediate and set aside.
Step 3 – Add a percentage of the thickened intermediate into your cold processed batch to increase viscosity or change rheology.

Will NatureThix 900 thicken oil?

Yes, NatureThix 900 has the ability to thicken most oils.

Will NatureThix 900 thicken silicone?

NatureThix 900 does not thicken pure silicone oils because they are highly non-polar.

Compatibility

Is NatureThix 900 compatible with water-in-oil systems?

Yes, it can be used in water-in-oil systems. The use level will be based on your desired viscosity or rheology profile.

Is NatureThix 900 compatible in surfactant-based systems?

Yes, NatureThix 900 is compatible and will thicken surfactant-based systems.

Is NatureThix 900 compatible in hair care emulsions?

Yes, NatureThix 900 is compatible with hair care emulsions.

Does NatureThix 900 prefer polar or non-polar oils?

NatureThix 900 is most efficient at thickening high-polarity oils such as castor oil. It can also build viscosity in low-polarity oils like squalene, which consists mainly of unsaturated hydrocarbons.

What are the limitations in incorporating NatureThix 900 in both oil-in-water and water-in-oil systems?

Your system must have enough emulsifier in the formulation. Make sure you have 25% emulsifier versus your oil phase (including NatureThix 900).

Has NatureThix 900 been tested in water-in-silicone systems?

We have no history of testing in water-in-silicone systems. However, if there is an emulsifier and water present in the formula, NatureThix 900 will be able to thicken the solution.

Working with NatureThix 900

What phase does NatureThix 900 get added in?

NatureThix 900 can be added in both the water phase or oil phase.

Can NatureThix 900 be melted into the oil phase?

Yes, NatureThix 900 can be added by melting into the oil phase.

What is the ideal temperature range when adding?

Based on numerous observations and formulations, NatureThix 900 works best between 176 °F (80 °C) to 194 °F (90 °C).

What are the ideal usage levels?

The use level will depend on your target viscosity and system. Generally 1-7%. Request the Performance Study above for more details and guidance.

How can you tell if NatureThix 900 is fully incorporated?

We recommend using the spatulation test method to confirm that you have properly incorporated the powder (refer to our “How to Disperse Wax Powders in Personal Care Emulsions” guide).

Stability

Is NatureThix 900 stable at low and high pH?

Yes, NatureThix 900 is effective over a wide pH range; 3.5 to 8.5.

Can NatureThix 900 be used as a stabilizing agent?

Yes, NatureThix 900 can increase the thixotropic index of serums, creams, lotion and prevent settling and phase separations.

What is the ideal stability temperature after the manufacturing process?

Finished products thickened with NatureThix 900 have the same recommended storage conditions between 59 °F (15 °C) to 86 °F (30 °C) similar to other serums, lotions, and creams thickened with other thickeners like carbomer.
